Aimee McKay began improvising while living in London where she sold used American vacuum cleaners over the phone to pay for classes.  A graduate of Emerson College, she plays “Principal Snyder” on Disney’s Walk the Prank and has appeared on 2 Broke Girls, New GirlArrested Development, Raising Hope, The Neighbors and Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23. She spent three years with the Second City Touring Company where she performed and taught improv from Washington State to Vienna, Austria, as well as a year with The Second City on Norwegian Cruise Line. Explore the collaborative creation of spontaneous, single-use theatre, created in the moment, and shared only by the performers and audience. Learn the basics of improvisation such as “Yes, And…”, dive into character exploration, ensemble, emotional commitment, and spontaneously create full scenes just from a one word suggestion. The goals? While there will be laughs, this intensive is about connecting, being present in the moment, and telling the truth. And you’ll end the weekend with a completely improvised show! Come create and have fun with our improv expert, Aimee McKay! For all levels. Ages 18 & up. Intimate setting, space limited.

Friday, June 21

  • 10am-2pm Registration & check-in
  •  2pm Yes, And! Cover agreement and what “Yes, And” means in improv. Begin to work on simple scenes.
  • 3pm Simple Stories. Explore the basics of storytelling and create stories together as a group.
  • 6-8pm Ensemble Building/Connection. Building trust within the group, creating personal connection with each member, learning to be okay with being uncomfortable.

Saturday, June 22           

  • 10am Yes, and other Improv warm-ups/games.
  • 11am Give & Take: Surrender. Dive into the concept of Give and Take. Practice letting go of ideas however brilliant they may be!
  • 5-7pm Relationships and Characters. Explore how relationships work with scenes and play with various relationship roles. Emotion. Explore the limits of our emotions and how they can move a story forward. Play with different emotions and how it feels to try them on. Then learn some techniques on how to spontaneously come up with characters for scenes through movement, endowment, and archetypes.

Sunday, June 23

  • 10am-noon  Scenework & Reality. Using all of the skills we’ve been developing, we will work on full scenes, adding walk-ons, tap-outs, and editing techniques. Next we work on Creating a Reality: Explore the environment through object work, scene painting, and endowing the space.
  • 5-6pm            Rehearsal for Showcase (optional)
  • 6pm Showcase (optional)
